Theralife Clinics North America was founded in early 2022 with the mission to minimize pain and debility by expanding access to expert radiation therapy (“Functional Radiotherapy”) for the treatment of benign conditions. One in four Americans over the age of 40 suffer from a benign condition that could be alleviated with radiotherapy. Currently, the resources available to deliver this treatment are focused on treating those with cancer.

Theralife’s physician leaders are renowned experts in the treatment of benign conditions using Functional Radiotherapy and work with partners nationwide to expand access to this treatment from qualified and trained physicians. In addition to providing training and support to partners, Theralife aims to increase the body of research about the treatment of these conditions by facilitating trials and registries.
Radiotherapy has always been a mainstay for malignant tumors therapy, but its use for benign conditions should not be ignored.

Dr Richard Shaffer is a UK-based radiation oncologist and prominent expert in the use of radiotherapy for treating benign conditions.
Since starting his practice in 2011, Dr Shaffer has treated more than 2000 benign patients, and provided training and mentoring to fellow physicians starting benign radiotherapy practices. He co-wrote the 2015 Royal College of Radiologists guidelines for benign conditions and is co-founder and President of the International Organisation for Radiotherapy for Benign Conditions (www.iorbc.com).
He is clinical lead for radiotherapy for benign conditions at GenesisCare and has previously chaired their weekly UK skin and benign multidisciplinary team meeting. He is also Medical Director of Xstrahl Limited – a medical device company that makes superficial radiotherapy machine for the treatment of benign conditions and skin cancer.
He has previously been chair of the IMRT-IGRT Radiotherapy Group, the Network Brain Tumour Working Group, Clinical Lead for Radiotherapy at St Luke’s Cancer Centre, and a trustee of the Fountain Centre (a local patient support charity).
In his early career, Dr Shaffer trained as a specialist registrar at various London teaching hospitals and completed a Clinical Fellowship in Radiation Oncology at the British Columbia Cancer Agency in Vancouver, Canada.

Abe has over 30 years’ experience devising and providing business systems and processes. For 18 years Abe has been providing patient-centered real-world and digital solutions, working with the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK, healthcare systems, government departments, and the private sector. He is the founder of an award-winning service provider to NHS, Government and HMOs. He is also founder and CEO of a Digital Technology company providing ‘patient-centered’ solutions. Abe collaborates with NHS England and the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). He is supported by the Academic Health Science Network (AHSN) and Innovation Agency. He is also funded through UK Research and Innovation and Private Enterprise.
Abe is co-founder of the International Organisation for Radiotherapy for Benign Conditions (IORBC). The aim of the IORBC is to improve awareness of Radiotherapy for Benign Conditions as a treatment modality, and to develop and host educational materials for the benefit of physicians, patients and other stakeholders.

James has spent his entire career serving the radiation therapy industry. He worked for one of the major medical equipment providers and is an expert in the technology used to treat both benign conditions and cancer. Additionally, he has deep experience with starting and operating radiation therapy facilities.
James is a veteran of several start-up businesses and is excited for at the potential that Theralife has to bring much needed relief to people who suffer from benign conditions.
He has a BA from Columbia University and an MBA from Emory’s Goizueta Business School.
